How do I tell if my Solar Hot Water Heater is broken?

I have had a Solar Hot Water heater on the roof of my 3 level home for about 10 years. I have often wondered how do you tell if the heater is broken? If the re-circulating pump dies, am i right in saying the electric heating back-up would kick in? Would then my electricity bill skyrocket without me knowing until I got my next quarterly bill? I’d like to be able to avoid this.

When I install them, I like to put a thermometer near the tank in the piping coming from the collectors on the roof so you can see if it there is hot fluid coming from the roof into the tank heat exchanger. A low tech way to verify if it is working is to CAREFULLY touch the pipe under the insulation coming from the roof during a sunny day. I say carefully, because it could be around 200 degrees F. You could also check if the pump is running on a sunny day, by carefully touching it to see if it is hot. If it is not, the sensors, controller, or pump could have died, those are all easily replaceable. http://www.altestore.com/store/Solar-Water-Heaters/c402/.

But yes, if the system is not working, your electric water heater will be doing all of the heating instead of just topping it off, so your electric bill will be higher.

Do It Yourself Home Solar Power – Smart Ways to Power the World!

To build your own do it yourself home solar power you simply need to understand how to make your own green energy source and today I’m going to tell you how to build your own home solar panel for electricity.

This way, the whole process will be far easier to handle.

The main parts have to be exposed to daylight.

To get them properly installed, solar modules are going to be mounted on a steel frame and positioned on your roof top. Power produced by the solar power system modules is converted from Direct Current ( DC ) to swapping Current ( AC ) thru an inverter. Next, the electrical power transfers from the inverter to the electric service panel.

The electric service panel is utilized for distributing the electrical power to different parts of your home or office to be used. As a consequence, the meter will be made to spin backwards and this creates a credit with the power company in balancing future usage.

This technique is commonly known as Net Metering and is totally approved by State Level Electricity Policy. You don’t need many talents beyond having the ability to handle wiring & basic tools with care and safety measures.

All of these parts can be simply picked up by you from the local ironmongers. Photovoltaic cell is the sole part that you may have to search on the net and it can be discovered simply on eBay.

A do it yourself home solar power is a great alternative if you want to save a bunch of money on your next electrical bill. The tricky part is simply knowing how to connect everything together and having some kind of guide to help you out throughout the way!

I highly recommend you get yourself a guide if you plan on doing a do it yourself solar power system for your home that way you don’t waste any time and learn all the tricks the professionals use when installing this stuff.

The guide I highly recommend you take a look at is link right below this article. It will be super useful for you especially if you want to get this project up and running very soon!

What side of my house should i put the solar panel on?

I am looking into putting a solar panel on my house, but i always get mixed up with which way the sun rises and sets in this country. What side of the house should the solar panel be put on?
Sorry, Im in England. Such a doofus sometimes.

No matter where you are on earth, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. In the norther hemisphere the sun tracks more to the south that is why positions of panels and windows to the south take advantage of the sun the best.

You need to consider not only the direction but the tilt of the solar panels too in order to get maximum efficiency.
I have included sole links about solar position and positioning solar panels. Hope it helps.

In todays increasing environmentally conscious society, reducing our carbon footprint is seen as a social responsibility. Furthermore, as traditional sources of power become evermore expensive, energy derived from renewable sources are becoming more attractive and sought after.

Herein lies the beauty of using the most efficient solar panels we can find as a means of providing some or all of our electrical power. Furthermore, the accessibility and affordability of efficient solar panels means that they are no longer looked upon as quirky but rather as innovative, sensible and ultimately cost-effective.

It is estimated, given the world governments’ increasing commitment to the use of renewable energy sources, that by the year 2030 some 14% of the world’s energy will be provided by solar power.

The term solar panel actually describes two types of device, to give them their technical names:

1. Solar photovoltaic modules

2. Solar thermal collectors.

Solar thermal collectors use the sun’s energy to heat water (in domestic use) or other fluids. A good solar hot water panel is able to provide an average household with around a third of its annual hot water supply.

However, it is with the photovoltaic modules (solar panels to you and I) that we will concentrate on here. These panels use solar sensitive cells to convert light energy from the sun into electricity and thereby provide a clean source of energy with no waste by-products.

For the science minded, photons from sunlight knock the electrons into a higher state of energy thereby creating electricity, passing the current so produced through a photodiode to power equipment or to recharge batteries.

Solar cells are interconnected and assembled into panels which require protection form the environment to allow them to continue to work effectively. Consequently, these panels are placed into a frame made of metal, plastic or fibreglass and glass fronted. The construction of the frame within which the solar cells are housed is vital. This is because the solar cells themselves are commonly made of wafer-based silicon and due to their being brittle they need protection from the elements, particularly impact from hail, wind and snow and from moisture, which would corrode the metal contacts and connections. A solar panel installation usually consists of multiple panels called an array.

The use of solar panels is becoming evermore popular and production has been doubling every two years, increasing by an average of 48% each year since 2002.

Building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) are increasingly being integrated into new domestic and industrial buildings either as a principal or an ancillary source of electrical power. In new builds, the arrays are incorporated into the roof or walls of the building and roof tiles with integrated PV cells can now be purchased.

For existing buildings, arrays can be retrofitted usually on top of the existing roof structure. Alternatively, arrays can be located separately and connected by cable to provide the power supply for the building. Arrays are usually installed in a position angled so as to allow access to as much sunlight as possible to increase their efficiency.

What is the best solar panel available, and what company does the best job for a grid tie system.?

Thinking the sharp 235 is near the top.

Hey Hockey, here’s my short answer, there is no “Best.” Not trying to let the wind out of your sails, but it’s like asking, “What’s the best car to buy?” If you have kids, the minivan is hard to beat, but it sucks as a 4 wheel drive SUV. solar panels all use the basic same type technology, but to compare features goes a whole lot deeper into the rabbit hole. If you live in Chicago and have limited roof space, it’s probably worth spending the extra buck and getting Sunpower units, they produce the most per square foot. If you want more hours of energy without tracking, single crystal is the way to go. If space is not an issue and you’re using rolls batteries, and a fixed rack, a multicrystal might be better for you. The point is, first determine what you want to do, then decide what product will fill the perscription the closest.

If you are really in the market for panels, my suggestion is to get a sub to Home Power Magazine. Then use your account info at their website to scour past issues. They had one about a year ago comparing all commercially available solar panels by all manufacturers, about a 9 page spread, with all their specs, including warranty info, power curves, and so on. Then you’d be in a position to make a real decision.

We’ve been powering our home for almost 10 years now with solar and wind. In our case, we selected Kyocera KC-120s, a multicrystal panel, installed on fixed racks. The cost, availability and warranty was the deciding factor. Turns out we had one panel go bad last year, something even my installer never had happen. Kyocera paid round trip shipping and installation cost in addition to sending me a new panel for no charge, they really stood behind their product. In my experience talking to other solar knuckleheads like me, most of the manufacturers are doing the same, because they have very little trouble with their products. Most panels are warrantied for 25 years, and typically they run much longer than that.

The Sharp is a good panel by the way, I know two people that have been using them for a few years, and they love them, mainly because they don’t ever have to look at them to keep them working. It’s been much the same with all our panels too. Check out Home Power, and some of the non profit groups I have listed below. In the end, whatever you decide to do, you will at least be well informed. Take care, Rudydoo

Among recent concerns about the use of nonrenewable fuels such as oil and coal, scientists have been trying to discover alternative ways of making energy and electricity available. Sunlight is a free, unlimited resource that hits the Earth with more energy in an hour than the people of the world use in a year. The colorful How Do Solar Panels Work? reveals how researchers are working on ways to harness the power of sunlight through solar panels and delves into the science behind this pollution-free energy source.

solar panels and how they work

Hi,

I am thinking about getting solar panels installed. #1 I like to cut my electric bill. #2 I like to eliminate my oil boiler and use some sort of electric boiler.
I use about 15000-30000 KW per hour( winter-summer). My oil bill is around 600 month winter time. Over all i pay around 4000 a year. My electric bil now is around 2000-2500 year. Is this possible?
I live in NY. I heard you can get up to $35000 rebate from LIPA( Electric company) and 2k from federal and 5k from State( is the state or federal every year?, how does that work). Any help is appreciated.

There is a variety of information available on the internet regarding solar panels. You didn’t say if you were interested in installing a photo-voltaic system to generate electricity, or if you wanted a passive solar system.
From what I’ve read, the method that would give you the greatest payback for your investment is the passive solar heater. I can’t give you exact instructions on how to construct one of these units, but there are many websites with instructions. My older brother had one of these mounted on his old farmhouse. He said his furnace didn’t run all day during the cold Wisconsin winters.
The government rebates or tax credits are usually a one time deal. They may pay for part of your installation, but they won’t cover the whole cost. The only thing I’ve heard of that will pay you every year is a wind generator tied into the electric grid, but thats another posting.

I’m including a link to a site that will show you how to build a cheap solar heater that you can try yourself.

Where to buy small wind turbine and solar panels.?

I need to get a small wind turbine and solar panel to power my pond with a pump and filter. I have searched forever but all is over 200 watts and costs a lot. I need something to power a car battery and is affordable. Please help me find one that can be purchased in England.

Why don’t they build acres and acres of Solar panels to Supply power to the US?

Why doesn’t the us government build acres and acres of Solar Panels around the us such as deserts in new mexico and Arizona and where ever land is available and build wind mills around them and Supply power to the us that way?

One reason is the amount of land taken up. As the questioner pointed out… “acres and acres” of land would be needed. Open land (what there is left of it) is needed for crops (read: FOOD) for forests (read: CARBON SINK –and human sanity!), for habitat for animals and birds. (For an eye opener do some research on how many bugs we’d have if we didn’t have birds — O! M! G! Without lots of birds, we will either drown in hordes of insects or in toxic chemicals trying to kill the insects, and end up killing ourselves instead.)

Even in the desert, habitat is destroyed by building acres and acres of solar panels, then you still have the inefficiency and huge cost of the transmission lines to get that power to where it’s wanted. Even the more-efficient parabolic reflector method takes up a lot of space, and still requires the large — and ugly — transmission towers marching across miles and miles of the countryside.

As was pointed out by others, solar makes more sense when done by individuals or small groups.

Now think of all the rooftop space in cities! You have people living and working directly under a possible site for solar panels. The panels would also create shade that would lessen the cooling needs of the same buildings. In Europe I understand there are cities and towns where almost every roof has solar panels. That is space that is NOT habitat or used for crops! (Except some buildings’ rooftops are now being used for rooftop gardens for FOOD! Another creative and wonderful idea!)

Solar could be just one answer. There will be many answers. Some large-scale, some done individually– home by home, building by building. But huge solar “farms” probably are not going to be a final answer.

Wind towers take up a lot of space too. They make noise that, if close to a home, is considered by many to be quite objectionable. The towers are huge, the blades are huge. They often kill birds that try to fly past. If you think it’s ok to kill birds, read up on the status of many bird species (declining), and where we’ll be insect-wise if we lose too many of our birds!

Wind turbine towers need to be very carefully sited in order to catch the winds, but not sited on the birds’ flyways. And of course they are very often the same, because birds use consistent wind current flows during migration to be able to travel so far without using as much of their own energy. Consistent wind currents are what the wind towers need also. There is a new design that is shaped different, more like a thick vertical tube, that operates something like the “squirrel-cage” fan, as opposed to a “blade” fan. These could be safer for birds. I do not know enough about them (yet) to say any more.

Wind power would need the same miles and miles of inefficient transmission lines as solar power needs when done in large “wind farms.” Even if an individual puts up a wind turbine, he/she will have to deal with huge batteries (I saw one installation that had a 2- or 3-car garage-sized building for the batteries) and they’ll also need transmission lines to get the power to their own home, even if it’s nearby.

I personally don’t like the wind towers on the landscape. They’re very tall, much taller than they look in pictures. I also know that we need, NEED the birds to keep insect populations down, if for no other reason!

Conservation (just plain using less) almost always is the most efficient way to save energy. That comes first. Do everything you can to simplify your lifestyle. Insulate and tighten your home; turn the heat down a bit in the winter, and the cooling up a bit in the summer. Drive less, share rides, drive slower, choose a fuel-efficient vehicle, and keep it well-maintained. Don’t do it alone, do it all with friends: compare notes, check how you’re doing. Make it a group or neighborhood thing. Don’t think of it as a YOYO (You’re On Your Own) project; it’s for all of us to do, and it’s easier when done together.

Is solar thermal related to biology?

There is a article on solar panel system just wanted to know if it was related to biology.

Solar panels and photosynthetic life forms both utilize the photoelectric effect discovered by Einstein, who won a Nobel price for this discovery. Light absorbed by solar panels or chlorophyll molecules will cause an electron to be emitted. These electrons are turned into electricity by solar panels. The living cells turn the electrons into energy stored in the glucose molecule through a complex biochemical process.

Lizards and other animals, including vultures and humans, may bask in the sun to absorb heat. Some solar panels do not generate electricity, but heat.

The updated, cornerstone engineering resource of solar energy theory and applications. Solar technologies already provide energy for heat, light, hot water, electricity, and cooling for homes, businesses, and industry. Because solar energy only accounts for one-tenth of a percent of primary energy demand, relatively small increases in market penetration can lead to very rapid growth rates in the industry which is exactly what has been projected for coming years as the world moves away from carbon-based energy production. Solar Engineering of Thermal Processes, Third Edition provides the latest thinking and practices for engineering solar technologies and using them in various markets. This Third Edition of the acknowledged leading book on solar engineering features: Complete coverage of basic theory, systems design, and applications Updated material on such cutting-edge topics as photovoltaics and wind power systems New homework problems and exercises

What are solar panels made out of?

Other than the silicon, gallium arsenide, clear plastics etc… that the solar cells are made out off there must be something else on the panels. Anyone know? I’m especially interested in materials that are harmful to the environment

I think they are experimenting with all kinds of materials for PV cell construction.

Cadmium telluride
Copper-Indium Selenide
Gallium arsenide (GaAs)
Light-absorbing dyes
Organic/polymer solar cells

I don’t know what the environmental impact of these things is, if anything.

If you’re looking for negatives to solar power, crystalline silicon cell manufacturing is very energy-intensive. It involves molten silicon which must be heated to 1600 C or 2900 F.

The cells have to spend a long time in the sun to produce more energy than it takes to make them.
