wo different ways to measure when a solar year has passed?
Suppose you live in a temperate climate, where most days are sunny.
You have no clocks.
Describe two different ways to measure when a solar year has passed.
Help!
Are you in Prof. Glymour’s class at CMU? I’m asking because we got that exact question as a hw assignment last week. One of my ways was to see what other star rises simultaneously (more or less) with the sun on the first day and then wait until the sun rises with that same star again. That period will be a year.
Here’s a website with some useful information.

Solar Energy (alternative Energy) $4.79 In books for children of this age, alternative energy is often treated as one topic, either in a single book or relegated to the last chapter in a volume on energy. After the oil crisis of the early 1970′s the subject underwent considerable research, and alternative energy projects are now in operation around the world. As well as examining these economically viable schemes, the series discusses possibilities for the future. These are likely to be increasingly relevant as environmental concerns assume more importance. Colour photographs and, for more difficult subjects, colour diagrams are used throughout the series. This book describes how solar energy is used today, the consequent possibilities and its environmental implications. The author begins by establishing why solar energy need concern us at all. He goes on to examine different methods of collecting the sun’s energy and putting it to use, and looks at the solar one power station in California and the Odeilo solar furnace in France, examples of how solar power is already in use around the world. Colour photographs and diagrams are used to illustrate the book, and a glossary explains difficult and technical words, which are highlighted in the text. The book also contains an index and an international list of addresses from which further information is available. Other work by the author includes The Chernobyl Catastrophe, which was nominated as a Book Trust Book of the Year for Children in 1989. |

Solar Architecture in Cool Climates $92.36 Although not camouflaging the scientific principles of energy flux in buildings, Porteous (Glasgow School of Art) and MacGregor (practitioner) have targeted Solar Architecture in Cool Climates to architects and their teams in order to illuminate through specific case studies in Europe–notably Scotland, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Germany–how buildings in wetter, cooler regions can be designed to take better advantage of available solar energy. Utilizing clear illustrations and photographs, the authors expound, in seven chapters, on the often-significant difference between the expected or designed energy performance of buildings and the results of monitoring actual energy consumption over time when the buildings are occupied. Techniques and technologies including glazing, transparent insulation, and thermal heat sinks for capturing and storing solar energy are discussed, and culminate in the chapter ‘Environmental Comfort and Well Being.’ Chapters devoted to adaptive, passive and machine controls of solar energy as well as examples from North American practice provide readers with specific design examples. The authors conclude with an examination of the political, technological, social, and psychological driving forces associated with making green solar architecture real. An excellent companion to Solar Architecture, ed. by Christian Schittich (2003). Endnotes. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Graduate students through professionals; two-year technical program students.–L. B. Sickels-Taves, Eastern Michigan University in CHOICE* A must-read for practitioners, teachers and others interested in or working with energy use in the built environment, including a delightful set of examples — Anne Grete Hestnes, former President of the International Solar Energy Society* Includes case studies from Europe and North America, dealing with new-build, retrofitting, and conceptual projects that outline future potential * Written in a clear, accessible style, approaching t@W=p£×ÿ¾Úð |

Solar House: Passive Solar Heating and Cooling $13.9 Shelter, like many other elements of human existence, comes at an extraordinary cost to our planet and its inhabitants. In the US alone, construction of 1.2 million new homes a year results in a massive drain on the Earth’s natural resource base. Today, nearly 60 percent of all timber cut in the US is used in building houses. Not to mention construction wastes and the huge amounts of resources used in the day-to-day operation of the modern household. In addition to environmental costs, there are the personal economic costs — the thousands of dollars each home owner spends each year to heat, cool, and power our homes.Today, a new generation of architects and builders is emerging, intent on creating homes that meet human needs for shelter while causing only a fraction of the environmental impact of conventional housing. The New Ecological Home provides an overview of green building techniques, materials, products, and technologies that are either currently available, or that will be in the near future. Author Dan Chiras provides a wealth of up-to-date, practical information for home buyers, owner-builders, and anyone interested in building for a sustainable future.Included are chapters on: The Healthy HouseGreen Building MaterialsWood-Wise ConstructionEnergy EfficiencyEarth-Sheltered ArchitecturePassing Solar Heating and Passive CoolingGreen Power: Electricity from the Sun and WineWater and Waste: Sustainable ApproachesEnvironmental Landscaping |

Prediction of Solar Radiation in Areas with a Specific Microclimate $75 One of the main objectives of the European Community Programme on Solar Energy is to provide solar energy practitioners — architects and engineers who design and implement both active and passive solar energy systems, including biomass and daylighting systems — with well documented meteorological and climatological data so that they can estimate the solar radiation falling on a receiving surface for any location and at any time throughout the year. As a complement to its other landmark contributions in providing firm data to the solar energy community, the CEC launched a new, 36-month-long programme on 1 April 1986, which was intended to provide a better understanding of the relationship between climatic factors and solar radiation, determine the effect of anthropogenic pollution on the amount of usable solar energy, and establish sound models for the correlation between weather data, pollution, regional orography, coastal influence and the solar radiation pattern. The current volume presents the results of this research programme, gathered from eight characteristic sites in the EC. The first three chapters deal with the problem in general, present the environmental parameters which influence the radiation climate of a site, and explain the process of modelling microclimate solar radiation for a specific site. Chapter 4 deals with specific methods for evaluating microclimate solar radiation, using both a software package and a pocket calculator. Chapter 5 supplies extensive references. |

Life in the Solar System and Beyond $32.45 From the reviews:pThis book provides a comprehensive overview of astrobiology. It is a course textbook, suited for a first year undergraduate course . The book is supported by a glossary, a bibliography of similar textbooks on similar and related areas, and a list of useful websites. The textbook has a strong emphasis on astronomy making this suitable as a course text in this subject with an emphasis on astrobiology. highly appropriate for courses in UK first year undergraduate programmes. (Alex Ellery, International Journal of Astrobiology, Vol. 3 (1), 2004)pBulging with concise explanations and 142 clarifying diagrams and photos, the book probably represents some of the best pedagogy in the solar system on these topics. Joness book just the right level for most undergraduates. Open-minded scientists looking for an authoritative tour of astrobiology will enjoy the book . The authors summary of exoplanet detection techniques is excellent . Jones keeps us interested with simple explanations . His approach is quite an achievement . (Charley Lineweaver, Physics Today, February, 2005).pThis book centres on the search for life in the Solar System and beyond. It includes an overview of many of the disciplines involved in this field of research, which include astronomy, biology and geology. It was good to see that the astronomy has been kept fairly descriptive and not too mathematical. This keeps the flow of the book. As an overview of the key subjects involved in astrobiology for a university course, I think this book is successful. (James Silvester, Astronomy Now, March, 2005)pThis is a textbook suitable for university use. this is one of the best. includes excellentrecent images of Mars, Europa and elsewhere, and is richly illustrated with explanatory diagrams. There is a useful index, a glossary and a list of resources (websites and books).
